Training

Since August 2023, University of Iowa College of Nursing Doctoral Candidate Abby Rail, along with the IHC team, has been working with five Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) across Iowa to decrease sepsis mortality rates through improved bundle compliance by focusing on provider champions and nurse-driven order set/protocols. During this session Abby will provide an overview of the project, noted trends and outcomes to date, as well as host a panel discussion with participating hospitals to hear their experiences firsthand.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Consider the epidemiology of sepsis and sepsis bundle interventions (SEP-1) in the context of social determinants of health.
2. Discuss best practices and challenges CAHs have in following evidence-based sepsis protocols.
3. Using implementation science, describe appropriate interventions to address barriers to following the best sepsis practices.
4. Examine successes and challenges of implementing sepsis bundle compliance improvement strategies in Iowa CAHs.
