The Opioid Prescriber Support (OPS) program provides evidence-based education, outreach, and technical assistance to help eligible prescribers strengthen opioid stewardship, improve chronic pain management, and reduce opioid-related risks at no-cost.

Designed to meet prescribers where they are, OPS offers practical tools, individualized support, peer learning opportunities, and access to clinical expertise focused on safe prescribing, non-opioid and non-pharmacological pain management options, overdose prevention, and connections to evidence-based treatment and recovery supports. Through this collaborative, patient-centered approach, OPS helps advance safer care for Medicare beneficiaries while supporting prescribers in making clinically appropriate decisions.

The goals of the OPS program are to:

Educate and provide outreach to outlier prescribers about best practices for prescribing opioids
Educate and provide outreach to outlier prescribers of opioids about non-opioid pain management therapies and non-pharmacological alternative pain treatments
Reduce the number of opioid prescriptions prescribed by outlier prescribers of opioids

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is there a cost to participate?
No. OPS is available at no cost to eligible clinicians, giving you access to support without adding a financial burden.
How much time does participation take?
Participation is designed to be low burden. Education, resources, and support will be tailored to your needs and data, with flexible options that fit your schedule. To get started, select the ENROLL NOW button and submit the brief webform. Enrolled providers will also submit brief quarterly data for three program measures, such as documented safety and tapering plans. To simplify reporting, you will provide only the numerator and denominator for beneficiaries prescribed opioids.
Do I have to attend live events?
No. You can attend live when it works for you or watch recordings when available. OPS is meant to support your practice, not add another requirement to your schedule.
What if I am already following safe opioid prescribing practices?
That is exactly why OPS may be useful. Many prescribers are already committed to safe, patient-centered opioid care; OPS helps you stay current, reinforces the good work you are already doing, and gives you quick access to tools, peer learning, and subject matter experts when questions come up.
Why am I receiving this outreach?
CMS sent a letter in January 2026 introducing the Opioid Prescriber Support Program and identifying prescribers who may benefit from no-cost education and support. If you have questions about why you received this outreach, contact the OPS team at 1-800-982-7888 or ops@allianthealth.org.
