Nursing Homes with large complex water systems, if not properly maintained can promote the growth of Legionella (the bacterium that causes Legionnaires’
disease). Residents, specifically those who have certain weakened immune systems or chronic disease are at high risk for Legionnaires’ disease. The significance of having a water management plan, performing ongoing surveillance, monitoring, and mitigation waterborne illness risk is essential in limiting Legionella and other waterborne pathogens from growing and spreading in Nursing Homes.
